After successfully finishing the Peking to Paris rally in a Minor 1000, the current owner looked for a higher performance car mor suited to long distance endurance rallies. Consequently an original 1966 Ex South African RHD Alfa Romeo 1600 Sprint GT was sourced to form the basis for a long distance competition car which was prepared by the late James Prowkovski of Bromsgrove, which was subsequently upgraded to 2 Litre, a limited slip diff. four wheel disc brakes, lightened body, and the installation of competition seats, roll cage, long range alloy fuel tanks, time keeping equipment. Suitably equipped the car was ready to take part in International events starting with the Classic Malts, and the London to Lisbon as a precursors to the Inca Trail in 2001. Work then continued with an engine rebuild by Jim Evans prior to completing the 2008 Panama – Alaska rally, in 2011 the Alfa took part in the Classic Safari from Dar es Salaam to Capetown. Following an accident on rough roads the car in South Africa, the Alfa sustained damage to the bodywork, and was repatriated to the UK for a complete rebuild which was entrusted to Adam Andrews of Veloce Sport in Lincolnshire. Since it’s return, the Alfa due to other commitments has not competed in any further events, but after being looked after by a specialist historic motor engineer, it is now ready for new challenges.
