First registered in Somerset as 641 XYD between May & October in 1964, and registered in Jersey on the 17th November 1968, it has remained within the same family ownership until we recently acquired it. The Princess is in good original condition have covered only 86352 miles from new. It has very recently been re-commissioned including having the braking system completely overhauled with a reconditioned brake servo, and callipers and wheel cylinders fitted with new rubber seals and stainless steel inserts fitted. Additionally, the Princess has been serviced with new air filters fitted and the fuel system overhauled. A new fuel pump has been fitted and the carburettors have been stripped, cleaned and rebuild. A new battery is fitted also. The car starts on the button and has a very quiet and healthy sounding engine, which drives well on the road. The Princess is a version of the Austin A99 Westminster produced by BMC from 1959 to 1968, latterly under the Vanden Plas marque. The model was launched in October 1959 under the name Princess 3-litre. From July 1960, these vehicles bore the name Vanden Plas Princess 3-litre, Vanden Plas having become a badge-engineered brand instead of being known as a coachbuilder for cars of other manufacturers. The 3-litre was superseded by the Vanden Plas Princess 4-litre R in 1964. The 3-litre was largely identical to the Pininfarina-designed Austin A99 Westminster and Wolseley 6/99 which used the same chassis and body. The Princess was given its own identity with a special Vanden Plas grille (fairly square, with a thick surround and vertical slats), round headlamps, and horn grilles on the front. The interior was lavish in typical Vanden Plas style, featuring burr walnut wood trim, leather seats and panels, and high-quality carpeting. A division between the driver and the rear compartment was an optional extra. Initially, it was powered by BMC's 3-litre C-Series engine, developing 108 hp A Vanden Plas Princess 3-litre with automatic transmission was tested by the British magazine The Motor in 1961 and had a top speed of 99.3 mph It could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 16.1 seconds while fuel consumption of 21.1 miles per imperial gallon was recorded. The test car cost £1,467 including taxes. This model was replaced in 1961 by the Vanden Plas Princess 3-litre Mark II. Styling was similar but the wheelbase was two inches longer and anti-roll bars were added to the suspension at both ends of the car. The engine was uprated to 120 hp . Better brakes were fitted, and interior improvements included built-in drop-down "picnic tables" for the rear seat passengers. Options now included "Smith's air-conditioning".
In good overall condition with the original black coachwork still retaining a reasonably good shine, with isolated areas of paint peeling , but in overall good unrestored condition. Mechanically the car has been recommissioned as detailed below. The interior has retained the original grey leather interior, which has no rips or tears. If required there is a vast amount of original spare parts for the car, which are pictured, these include mechanic parts, body panels and a red interior from another car. The spares are additional and can be sold seperatly in addition to the sale price. The car is a very good original example, in good mechanical condition with scope to improve by the next enthusiastic owner should they wish to, as there is still scope to improve this cars condition.
There are some small areas of surface rust where the paint has flaked and the chrome is in fairly good condition, complete with all wheel trims and spotlights.
The grey leather interior is original and in good untorn condition, the dash and the burr walnut veneer panels have mostly survived well. An original Radiomobile radio is fitted.
Having been recommissioned, the brakes have completely overhauled with rebuilt cylinders, master cylinder, rebuilt callipers, cylinders and brake servo, the SU carburettors have been rebuilt after careful cleaning and tuned with new fuel lines and a new fuel pump fitted. The ignition system has new leads & caps fitted, new points, condenser, a new started solenoid fitted , The engine bay has been cleaned, and the car tuned . The car drives well with a quiet engine, changes gear smoothly with good steering.
