The monocoque construction D-Type was a highly successful racer, produced by Jaguar Cars between 1954 and 1957, winning the Le Mans 24 Hours race three years running (the first by the works team of Hawthorn/Bueb and the latter two by the Ecurie Ecosse team). It is believed that around 70 were produced and, not surprisingly, should an original example come to market these are multi-million Pound vehicles. As a result, there is a thriving market for evocations or replicas. This D-Type replica – sourced from a 1977 Daimler Sovereign donor car - was built by Realm Engineering of Honeybourne in Worcestershire, who have a reputation for top-quality recreations, not least because their Jaguar D-types benefit from additional chassis design input by Reynard Racing – providing greater strength and ultimately better road holding.
This is an excellent example of a highly sought-after replica, which runs and drives beautifully, with a fantastic exhaust note.
The fibreglass bodywork, finished in British Racing Green, is unmarked.
The interior is spartan yet functional as might be expected of a racing car, but it does have leather trimmed seats together with full harness seat belts.
The car has a formidable specification: 4.2 litre Jaguar XK engine with gas-flowed head, hardened valve seats and triple Weber carburettors. A six-branch stainless exhaust manifold if fitted with twin side-exit exhaust pipes. Other benefits include electronic ignition; an alloy radiator tank; electric fan and stainless steel petrol tank. The suspension features adjustable SPAX shock absorbers and the car rides on Dunlop pattern alloy wheels. Braking is via vented discs and XJ6 4-pot calipers on the front and outboard XJ40 discs on the rear, with a twin master cylinder set-up, adjustable for front/rear bias. The vehicle is in full working order and runs sweetly. A new battery was fitted in 2021 and new tyres all round in 2019.
