This Austin Chalfont drives very well, having been regularly serviced and maintained as required, with any work needed being attended to. This is a great opportunity to acquire a pre-War 7-seater limousine with a 6-cylinder engine, which could continue in its role as an ideal wedding hire car or become a spacious family touring vehicle.
The body colour was changed to blue over black with pale blue coach line by the current owner and remains in good condition (as would be expected of a wedding hire vehicle). The underside is in good solid condition and well preserved.
The side valve straight-six engined Austin 16 was reputedly capable of 60mph. The owner undertook an engine rebuild in 2003. An electric fuel pump has been fitted (the original is available). Regularly owner maintained and in good usable mechanical condition and has covered about 750 miles each year in Guernsey, which equates to 20 – 30 outings a year, so used on a regular basis.
The limousine interior boasts additional fold-down seats in the passenger compartment, together with a glass partition and driver intercom. The grey leather & cord upholstery is good condition.
The Austin 16 was produced between 1927 and 1937. In total 5,742 were built in various body styles during its 10 years in production.
The later cars (from 1934) have a body-coloured radiator shroud and synchromesh on 3rd and 4th gears. They were capable of 60 mph in their day.
This car was purchased by the current owner in 1995 for wedding hire purposes and has been in regular use since that time.
