In single family ownership from new, this Daimler Sovereign is a very smart, genuine low mileage vehicle which has been refurbished as required, well maintained and always garaged. We have detailed records of all service/repair works from 1998 onwards. Located in Jersey and locally registered, the 4-digit registration number is not included in the asking price but could be available by separate purchase. We can ship worldwide and can assist with shipping and importation processes if required.
Solid and largely original, the car has received panel repair and paintwork touchup whenever required. Solid and largely original, the body of the car has received panel repair and paintwork touchup whenever required. With all chrome trim present and in good condition, set off by the understated but very smart Dove Grey paintwork, the car presents very well.
The Sovereign was fitted with a twin-carburettor version of the 4.2-litre Jaguar engine, mated to a Borg Warner Model 8 automatic transmission. The powerplant developed a claimed 245 bhp at 5,500 rpm. This car received a major mechanical overhaul in 1998 which included a rebuild of the engine with new main/big end bearings, new piston rings and new valve guides fitted. The timing chains were replaced in 2015. Regularly maintained to date, the car runs and drives very well.
The interior of the car is in a generally excellent condition – a lovely place to be. The veneered dashboard is particularly smart with a full complement of working instruments. The original red leather seating is suitably age-patinated with a single repair to the driver’s seat. The cloth headlining was renewed in 2012.
The Daimler Sovereign and its Jaguar 420 equivalent were introduced in 1966 and produced for only a couple of years, with around 16,000 in total made. It was developed from the earlier Jaguar S-Type, retaining its sophisticated independent rear suspension, but fitted with the larger 4.2-litre XK engine and given a modest re-style, with the S-Type curvaceous front squared-off, to better match the rearof the car (which was not altered from the S-Type). As a sporting saloon, the performance of the Sovereign (and Jaguar 420) was highly thought of at the time, with a top speed of more than 125 mph and 0–60 mph in under 10 seconds.
This was badge-engineering at its closest – the two models were virtually identical. Aside from specific badging and slightly different design radiator grilles, the Daimler had power-assisted steering as standard and a slightly different finish to the leather seats. The Sovereign was manufactured for a little longer than the 420, with the last of the 5,800 Daimler models built rolling off the production line in July 1969.
The Daimler Sovereign offered here was first registered in Jersey, in July 1969. It has remained in the island and in the same family ownership from new – a very original, cherished and well maintained vehicle.
