Overview
Overall Comments

Having been the subject of a relatively recent and thorough professional restoration, this car has subsequently been very well cared and remains in a first-rate and very usable condition. Together with a copy of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust build certification, there is a file covering the restoration work of 2009-2011 and subsequent history. The car is currently Jersey registered and we can assist with shipping and importation processes if required. We can ship worldwide.

Body

The photographic record of the restoration work shows a body-off chassis refurbishment, and the body itself received a full respray in Jaguar Meteorite Silver. All the bright work has been re-chromed, or replaced if required. Having been cherished by the current owner, the bodywork has been well cared for and remains in very good condition. The chassis/underside and engine bay are notably clean and tidy.

Mechanical

As part of the restoration work in 2011, the engine received a full rebuild - the bottom end was refreshed (new shells) and cylinder block rebored with new oversize pistons fitted. The suspension and brake system also had a complete overhaul with parts renewed as required. A stainless steel exhaust is fitted, as is a spin-on oil filter conversion. The car remains in excellent mechanical condition, everything works as expected and it drives very well.

Interior

The veneer on dashboard & door cappings was renewed as part of the 2011 restoration work. A new red leather interior and new carpets throughout were also fitted. The car has the benefit of a sliding steel sunroof – the cloth headlining has been renewed. This plush and spacious interior is in excellent condition.

History

The Jaguar Mark V was launched at the 1948 London Motor Show and produced for a relatively short 3 year period, with the last cars built at Coventry in mid-1951. Available as a 4-door saloon initially and then as a 2-door DHC (convertible) model, around 10,500 cars in total were built.

The model was available with either a 2½ litre or 3½ litre straight 6, pushrod overhead-valve engine and 4-speed manual gearbox (automatic transmission was not available). The claimed power output of the 2664 cc variant was 102 bhp and 125 bhp for the larger 3485 cc engine. A contemporary test of a 3½ litre engined-car by The Motor magazine in 1949 yielded a top speed of 90.7 mph and 0–60 mph acceleration time of 20.4 seconds.

This was the first Jaguar with independent front suspension; an hydraulic braking system and smaller, wider 16" wheels. The body was styled much like the prewar cars but with a more flowing appearance for wings and headlights. It had wheel spats fitted (another first for a Jaguar) and an improved level of trim over earlier cars. It was the model used to launch the famous Jaguar slogan ‘Grace, Space and Pace’.

This particular 3½ litre Mark V was produced as a Homemarket model in February 1951 and little further history is known until it was re-patriated to the UK from Canada in 1992. Thereafter it appears to have been unused for some years until a new owner commissioned a complete professional restoration between 2009 and 2011. The car was then re-registered in the UK and sold shortly afterwards to a new Jersey-based owner. The car has been well looked after since then, owner maintained and kept in excellent condition.
