An older restoration, but in excellent condition throughout and driving very well. Supplied with genuine Mercedes parts book, workshop manual and original handbook together with a history file from 1990 onwards. The car is currently Jersey registered - the asking price does not include the 4-digit Jersey registration number. We can ship worldwide and can assist with transport and importation processes if required.
The restored bodywork is in excellent repair, there is no corrosion, both paintwork and chrome trim shines, with just a few small blemishes to betray the age of the work carried out. The engine bay is clean and tidy. The underside of the car is in very clean condition – it looks almost unused.
This Mercedes has the more powerful version of the 2195cc engine, equivalent to the 220Sb model, which featured twin carburettors and produced a claimed 110hp at 5000 rpm. This raised top speed to a little over 100 mph and gave a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 15 seconds. Although restored some years ago, the car has been well-cared for by its last owner. It has recently been inspected with service items replaced as required. It performs well and provides a very comfortable drive.
Having been fully refurbished, the interior remains in first-class condition – seats, doorcards, carpets, headlining and dashboard all in excellent repair.
The Mercedes-Benz W111 series was introduced in 1959, replacing the Ponton-series cars, with the W111 chassis code given to its ‘range-topping’ vehicles. The series earned the nickname ‘Heckflosse’ or ‘Fintail’, because of the distinctive appearance of the rear quarter design – considered radical for Mercedes at the time.
Initially the range consisted of 4-door saloons, but this was later expanded with (slightly re-styled) 2-door coupés and cabriolets. A variety of powerplants were also employed, commencing with 6-cylinder, 2.2 litre engines, subsequently added to with a larger, 3.0 litre version (W112) and 4-cylinder petrol and diesel options (W110). Production of the 4-door saloons ended in 1968, with a little under 300,000 built. The two-door coupés and cabriolets continued until 1971.
The vehicle offered here was sold new in Jersey through the local Mercedes agent, Jacksons Garage, in December 1965 and has remained in the island all its life. Passing through the hands of a couple of keepers, the last owner acquired the vehicle in 1990 and embarked on a comprehensive restoration of the car, which covered metalwork, paint, chrome etc. and a professional engine refurbishment and rebuild in the UK.
We believe the low mileage recorded is likely to be correct, as the car has had limited subsequent use in its last long-term ownership, although the last verifiable mileage is a service book stamp in July 1974, showing 28,169 miles.
