Overview
Overall Comments

A smart and eminently usable example of the Mercedes R107 Series, powered by a smooth, 2.8 litre 6-cylinder engine. A Grand Tourer par excellence, equally ready for long Continental jaunts or top-down local motoring. The car is Jersey registered and we can assist with both shipping and importation processes if required. Any import duties and transport costs would be additional to the price listed.

Body

The bodywork is straight and free from dents. The Light Ivory paintwork is in good condition and all the stainless brightwork is present and in good order. The hood and its lining are in great shape and the folding mechanism works perfectly. A matching colour hardtop is available with the vehicle.

Mechanical

Starting, running and driving well, with the automatic gearbox changing smoothly. The car has recently had a major service with ourselves, which included a partial rebuild of the braking system, renewing front discs and caliper pistons/seals etc.

Interior

The interior is complete, tidy and showing little sign of its age – the beige leather seats have an appropriate level of patination. A modern JVC CD player/tuner is fitted.

History

The Mercedes-Benz R107 series sports cars were produced between 1971 and 1989, when replaced by the R129 series SL-Class, with around 240,000 built during that period. They were offered with a number of different engine options - initially just a V8, then a smaller capacity straight 6 as well.

The R107 used the chassis components of the midsize Mercedes-Benz W114 saloon series, but in a shorter-wheelbase, 2-seat, convertible/roadster style with standard soft-top, and optional hardtop. The body style did not materially change from their introduction in 1971 through to the end of production.

The 280SL model was available from July 1974, fitted with a fuel-injected 2.8 litre straight 6, mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission (from 1980). Mercedes claimed an output of 182 bhp for this variant, which was replaced in September 1985 with the larger-engined 300SL.

There is little historical documentation to accompany the 280SL offered here. Mercedes-Benz records show it was built in December 1983 and we know it was first registered new in the UK in February 1984. The car remained in the UK for only a couple of years before moving to Jersey, where it was re-registered in July 1986. There is then something of a gap until 2007, when the current long-term owner acquired the vehicle in July of that year with a recorded 33,000 miles at that point.
