Overview
Overall Comments

This is a smart and very usable TD series Midget, which has received much attention since its return to the UK – for which we have a detailed written record of the renovation works carried out, together with many supporting invoices. It is ready for a new owner to press into regular service. Whilst still UK-registered, the car is currently located in Jersey. We can assist with shipping and importation processes if required.

Body

The chassis is rust free and has been repainted. The ash frame is in good condition with some floor panels having been replaced. The bright red paintwork is not absolutely perfect but is in a very good, presentable condition with just a little age-related patina. The brightwork is all present and in good condition. A new tan double duck hood has been fitted and the TD has sidescreens and a tonneau cover.

Mechanical

The engine rebuild carried out included a rebore with new pistons etc.; the fitment of lead-free valve seats and a crankshaft oil seal upgrade. The car has been well maintained since – the brake system having recently been overhauled. It starts, runs and drives very well.

Interior

As part of the renovation works completed in the UK, the interior received new vinyl seating and matching carpets, all of which remain in very good condition. The conversion to righthand drive has been expertly carried out – with a new cherry wood dashboard fitted.

History

The MG T-series Midget first appeared in 1936 and production of the model ran until 1955, passing through a number of iterations, from the TA to TF. As might be expected, with each new series launched the car was improved with better mechanicals, a little more power and grew in size and (relative) sophistication. Always a good seller, by the mid ‘50s however, the pre-War origins were obvious and the model was replaced with the new – and thoroughly modern – MGA. A little over 50,000 T-series cars were constructed.

The TD series was launched at the beginning of 1950 and, whilst largely a continuation of the previous TC model, it featured a revised chassis, independent front suspension and steering rack (in place of the previous steering box). These changes improved the ride and handling over the earlier series. Visually, the fitment of smaller 15-inch steel wheels gave the model a more streamlined and modern appearance. Performance-wise, it was similar to the outgoing TC – a press roadtest from 1952 achieving a top speed of 77 mph and 0–60 mph acceleration time of 18.2 seconds. The TD was a great export success, with almost all of the 30,000 made sold overseas - nearly 80% going to the USA. Production ended in 1953, with the introduction of the TF series.

The TD offered here was built in December 1950 as a lefthand drive model and exported to the USA, where it was first registered in April 1951. We have no details of its American past prior to its repatriation to the UK in 2013, with a recorded mileage of 50,700. The new British owner undertook a full renovation of the vehicle, including conversion to righthand drive and an engine rebuild/refresh. The car was subsequently only subject to dry weather use and always garaged, acquiring only a few thousand more recorded miles. In 2023 it was sold to a new Jersey-based owner, but issues with garaging mean it is now offered for sale again.
