A very low mileage, special edition MBG GT in excellent, original condition, reflecting the care given to it and the limited use during its life. The condition is quite remarkable and it is a pleasure to drive. A collector’s vehicle which could equally be used on a daily basis. In this respect, the MGB would be ULEZ compatible.
The bodywork is in excellent original condition and wears its original paint. This car has all the original LE specification fitments - a front spoiler and alloy wheels, together with a metallic paint finish and special LE decals on the sides of the car. Minilite alloy wheels are currently fitted but the five original alloy wheels (in very good condition) are included with the car.
The engine bay is very tidy and in clean, original condition. The vehicle benefits from the fitment of a high-powered electric fan; battery isolator; under bonnet charge point; twin ignition coils; driving lights and stainless steel exhaust system. Five new Blockley tyres were fitted in 2023. An excellent runner – having the optional overdrive gearbox - driving just as a well-cared for, very low mileage and little used vehicle should.
The interior too is in excellent condition, as might be anticipated for a low mileage vehicle and all original, with the exception of the front seats and headrests which have been upgraded (firmer seat units for extra comfort) and refurbished with leather-faced covers. The original seat covers come with the car. A modern JVC radio unit is fitted.
Quite possibly the best known small British sportscar of all time, the MGB was first introduced in 1964 – in Roadster form – and production continued until 1980, by which time over half a million (of all variants) had been produced. The car still has a large following to this day and a good support network through specialist suppliers and an owners club.
Limited changes were made to the car prior to the substantial revision to its appearance from the 1974 model year, when the original chrome bumpers were replaced with new, steel-reinforced black rubber bumpers front and rear, to meet new US impact regulations.
Throughout the model’s life, the 1800cc engine was rated at 95 bhp peak power at 5,400 rpm, with a 6,000 rpm redline. In 1968 the gearbox was uprated to offer full synchromesh on all 4 gears. This gave performance figures of a top speed around 105 mph, and a 0-60 mph time of around 12 seconds.
The MGB Limited Edition models were introduced in 1979 to celebrate 50 years of production at MGs Abingdon plant but were effectively the 'end of the line', as the factory closed in October 1980. MGB LE’s were fitted with a front spoiler and the GT variant was finished in pewter metallic with silver side stripes and furnished with a silver grey interior. In all, 1,000 Limited Edition MGBs were produced - 420 in Roadster form and 580 GT models.
This GT model was supplied new in the UK as part of the final Abingdon production run and had very little use in its first 30 years, recording only a little over 20,000 miles prior to import to Jersey in 2013. It then covered only a further 5,000 miles - mostly in Europe where the car resided at times – before being sold by us back into the UK and re-registered with its original number in 2023. We have recently acquired the car again, which now has just 26,461 miles recorded.
