Jensen

Formed in the 1930's by two brothers Richard & Allen Jensen initially as coachbuilders. Their first car was in 1936 powered by the Meadows engine followed by an early interceptor in the 1950's powered by a 4 Litre Austin Engine. It was this power unit which was employed in the dramatic and innovative 541 series of 1954 this superbly styled GT car was produced in recently invented GRP (Glass reinforced plastic). Of the 541 Range 541, 541 deLuxe, S41 R and S41 S probably the most desirable was the 541 R which was the fastest four seater car Autocar Magazine had ever tested! The last model the 541S a wider sympathetically restyled body automatic (RR Bentley) gear box and the first production car to have disc brakes all round and seatbelts as standard. Only 108 were produced, visually the most appealing it was superseded by the V8 5.9 & 6.3 litre CV8, producing 136mph and outstanding acceleration. The late 1960's saw a new Italian style for the CV8 and the interceptor was born. An innovative car in particular the FF or Ferguson formula which was the first production cart to be fitted with FWD and anti-locking brakes. It was 15 years later that Audi bought out the Quattro as a FWD performance car. The interceptor was supplied in FF MkI, II,III and convertible models powered by a 6.2 or 7.2 litre V8 engine which later assisted in Jensens downfall with the fuel crisis of the 1970's. Despite their heavy fuel consumption today they still have an avid following. Known as top of the range luxury sporting cars in their day in the 1970's they regularly appear in our workshops either for sale or for restoration and maintenance works. Parts availability is generally good but they are very reasonably priced, a good condition 541 and interceptor around the ?10,000 bracket and a convertible ?20,000. A lot of car for not much money a great noise.
