Northern Ireland's first car manufacturer was established under the guidance of John Delorean in the early 1980's, with the aim of producing an inexpensive supercar. The single vehicle which resulted - with its gullwing doors, brushed stainless steel bodywork, Lotus designed suspension and Renault V6 rear-mounted power unit - soon became dated however, not helped by problems with reliability. Falsifying sales figures soon led the Government backers to intervene and the Delorean Car Company folded in a tangle of legal battles and imprisonment.
